Metropolis Performing Arts Center is seeking main cast and understudies for our upcoming production of The Christmas Schooner, directed by Patrick Tierney, choreographed by Jenna Schoppe, with music direction by Kailey Rockwell.
Submissions are now open through 5pm on Monday July 13th.
All rehearsals and performances for both shows will take place at Metropolis Performing Arts Center, 111 W Campbell St Arlington Heights, IL 60005.
The Christmas Schooner
Rates & Schedule:
Principal Cast Rate: $700 rehearsal stipend, $70 per show
Ensemble Rate: $600 rehearsal stipend, $60 per show
Youth Performers: $400 rehearsal stipend, $40 per show.
Any Youth Performers under the age of 16 will need to secure an Employment Certificate for Minors from the state of Illinois.

Character Breakdown:
Karl Stossel, Age 9 (Male identifying; age 8-12; Vocal range: G3-E5)
An adventurous and curious boy who admires his grandfather and father greatly and wants to grow up to be sailors just like them. He is a proud young man, but not without a certain sensitivity.
Gustav Stossel (male identifying; age 50s/60s; Vocal range: G2-F4)
Peter’s father and Karl’s grandfather. He is a hardworking sailor, a wise, calm and kind man, but very stubborn. Speaks with a slight German accent.
Peter Stossel (Male identifying; age 30s/40s; Vocal range: G2-F4)
The quintessential husband, father, and son. Brave and compassionate. He loves his family very much. A hardworking sailor.
Alma Stossel (Female identifying; age 30s/40s; Vocal range: G3-F5)
Peter’s wife and Karl’s mother. She is motherly and caring but practical and strong, no-nonsense. She holds down the house while her husband is at sea.
Karl Stossel, Age 15/Young Man (Male identifying; age 13-18; Vocal range: C#3-E4) The same boy as he was at 9, but stronger, more mature, and on the verge of becoming a man like his father. Doubling as a storyteller. Storytellers directly address the audience as narrators, as well as portray various characters within the story.
Rudy/Man #1 (Male identifying; age 20s/30s; Vocal range: B2-G4)
The goofier of the two between himself and Oskar, he is also a skilled sailor who deeply respects Captain Stossel. Has a biting sarcasm. Doubling as a storyteller. Storytellers directly address the audience as narrators, as well as portray various characters within the story.
Oskar/Man #2 (Male identifying; age 20s/30s; Vocal range: B2-G4)
A hotheaded, know-it-all with a big heart. He likes to pick fights with Gustav and is one part of a dynamic duo with Rudy. Doubling as a storyteller. Storytellers directly address the audience as narrators, as well as portray various characters within the story.
Steve/Man #3 (Male identifying; age 30s/40s; Vocal range: Bb2-F4)
Although he is a man of indulgence, he is all business. Perhaps the most mature and most serious of Captain Stossel’s three right-hand men. Doubling as a storyteller. Storytellers directly address the audience as narrators, as well as portray various characters within the story.
Hans/Officer Wells/Man #4 (Male identifying; age 20-60; bass)
Member of the crew and dedicated, hard-working sailor. Doubling as a storyteller. Storytellers directly address the audience as narrators, as well as portray various characters within the story.
Enid/Woman #1 (Female identifying; age 20-40; alto)
Devoted wife and mother within the community. Doubling as a storyteller. Storytellers directly address the audience as narrators, as well as portray various characters within the story.
Martha/Kate/Woman #2 (Female identifying; age 30-50; mezzo-soprano)
Peter Stossel’s cousin who lives in Chicago. Her moving letter to Peter is the catalyst for the entire story. Doubling as a storyteller. Storytellers directly address the audience as narrators, as well as portray various characters within the story.
Olive/Rose/Woman #3 (Female identifying; age 40-60; mezzo-soprano)
Devoted wife and mother within the community. Doubling as a storyteller. Storytellers directly address the audience as narrators, as well as portray various characters within the story.
Mary Claire Daugherty/Young Girl (Female identifying; age 9-12)
Young, hopeful Irish-American girl. Dialect encouraged, but not required. Doubling as a storyteller. Storytellers directly address the audience as narrators, as well as portray various characters within the story.

Metropolis School of the Performing Arts is part of Metropolis Performing Arts Centre. The School enriches the lives of students through performing arts disciplines including musical theatre, drama, music, improvisation, and more. We offer private lessons, group classes, camps, productions, and workshops to learners ages 3 to 80+. Classroom space is located on the 2nd floor of Metropolis Performing Arts Centre and we also have various programs that take place in the community.
As Metropolis School of the Performing Arts grows and evolves, we want to develop a pool of talented teaching artists interested in working with us and give our students opportunities to learn from new voices.
