Anna in the Tropics

1/15/09-2/21/09
show poster

It’s 1929 in a traditional family owned cigar factory in Tampa, Florida. The ceiling fan slowly rotates the humid air as a family of beautiful young women sit on old wooden chairs carrying on the tradition of hand rolling cigars. Their lives in the factory spark to flames when the young, handsome Juan Julian is hired as the factory “lector” – a Cuban tradition of a person who reads poetry, newspapers and novels out loud to help workers pass the time.

As Julian reads his favorite novel, Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, his words ignite emotions and desires that change the women, the factory and their lives forever. From dreams of escaping a passionless marriage to those of starting a new life, far away from the routine of the factory, nothing will ever be the same again. Immerse yourself in this sultry, emotionally riveting experience.

FACT: Anna in the Tropics won the Pulitzer Prize in 2003. The award totally caught the New York press and all of Broadway by surprise – since it won the prestigious award without ever being performed in New York. Later that season, Anna in the Tropics made its Broadway Debut.
