ACTING PROGRAM
The Acting Program improves our students’ ability to grow within ensembles and also as individual artists. Young actors gain self awareness and confidence and work toward mastering a set of skills that are valuable, fun and develop the imagination.
Acting Process
Through varied approaches that include games, exploratory exercises, acting theories, and building of specific vocal and physical techniques, students work on their skills as actors and communicating through a common vocabulary.
Acting Performance
Building on the technique that is learned in the process class, students have the opportunity to explore scripts and original work culminating in a performance piece.
*Acting Process is a prerequisite before taking Acting Performance at each age level. If you have taken classespreviously (since Fall 2008) at Metropolis in Acting, that will suffice as a process prerequisite.
MUSIC THEATRE PROGRAM
The Musical Theatre Program provides our students with an opportunity to truly hone their skills as musicians, singers, actors and dancers.
Musical Theater Process
Through this program, students will be able to build as an ensemble as well as hone their music reading skills, gain self confidence, and be exposed to a wide variety of lyricists, styles of music and choreography.
Musical Theatre Performance
Building on the technique that is learned in the process class, students have the opportunity to explore scripts, songs and original work culminating in a performance piece. *Musical Theatre Process is a prerequisite before taking Musical theatre Performance at each age level. If you have taken classes previously (since Fall 2008) at Metropolis in Musical Theatre, that will suffice as a process prerequisite.
Theatre Studio Program
This intensive program is for dedicated students seeking an advanced track focusing on scene study, character development, voice and movement skills, and developing musicality. SPECIALTY THEATRE CLASSES
The Summer Drama Program is the perfect complement to our year-round classes. It gives young artists a unique and creative opportunity to put their acting chops to the test while they develop a performance piece based on a popular theme. These Specialty Classes have been carefully designed to meet the interest and needs of students developing skills in the performing arts. Be a part of this exciting summer at the Metropolis School!
Puppetry and Mask
Students will dive into the creative world of puppets and mask by designing their own characters, environment and adventures. Using one of the world’s oldest and most popular art forms, students will discover how to communicate through movement, gesture, sound and song.
Song and Dance
Students interested in Musical Theatre will love this class! By developing technique in acting, singing and dancing, students will rehearse scenes and songs from some of their favorite Broadway musicals.
Theatre Design
Discover what it is like to design sets, costumes and lights for the theatre! Students will creatively explore all of the elements of theatre design in this class. This is the ultimate in creativity and expression. Students will display their designs in the Metropolis Lobby during selected summer performances.
Musical Comedy
This class will combine the elements of song, dance, physical comedy and some circus arts. Students will have the opportunity to explore these creative genres and discover how thrilling true comedy can be.
Improvisation
Gain some serious Improvising skills through this fun and energetic class. This is a crash course on how to Improvise like the pros. Learn from the best actors that have studied and performed with Second City and IO (formerly, Improv Olympic).
Stage Combat
This thrilling class will highlight hand-to-hand, rapier and dagger, physical stunts and more. In a safe environment, students will learn the moves and how to execute them so that any audience will be fooled!
PRIVATE COACHING
Whether you’re a professional actor, looking to break into the field or auditioning for college admission, this thorough, intimate learning experience is for you. You’ll receive one-on-one instruction from our top-notch coaches who will help perfect your audition pieces and provide constructive feedback. We offer private coaching in acting, voice, scene study and Alexander Technique*. Weekly sessions or one-time coaching sessions are available for monologues, scene work and audition song and dances.

*ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE
Professional actors have been using this technique for decades and now’s your chance to master the technique as well. Through this movement-based approach, you’ll learn to free your voice and breath, as well as release your muscle tension – which will give you the edge you need for auditions and performances.
