Interview with Education Director
Annie Sisson-Rezac
re:CREATE sat down with Annie Sisson-Rezac, the Education Director at Metropolis Performing Art Centre, to ask a few questions about the current state and future of the popular and growing school. The School of the Performing Arts, or SOPA, just began registration for its Spring 2008 semester, the first Semester to launch completely under the guidance of Annie.
Why the curriculum changes in SOPA?
We wanted to provide our students with the opportunity to develop strong ensembles among their peers, an ability to articulate their thoughts and ideas about performances and literature, and a solid foundation of skills that contribute to their life-long growth. The new curriculum allows for these developments to occur in a richer way that is also aligned with state educational standards.
What are your long-term goals for the School - camps, Drama and Music Schools, outreach, everything.
The long term goals for the Drama and Dance Schools include offering Play and Musical Productions each session for students to perform in on the mainstage, more specialized offerings in technical theatre, stage combat, theatrical movement and playwrighting. We also want to have student ensembles of actors that can produce, design, direct, and act in their own original productions.
The music school goals are to continue the growth of our Chamber Ensembles and The Metropolis Youth Symphony. This year the Youth Symphony is traveling to Guatemala and in future years, I'd love for our Youth Choir and Chamber Ensembles to have the same opportunity.
Outreach is growing in leaps and bounds and currently our goal is to be able to have enough grant funding to grow our free program offerings for schools who need the arts and don't have the funds.
Camps are continually growing and in the future, we'd like to provide summer performing arts camp opportunities to other communities who don't have access to it.
What are you most excited about in your life outside of work right now?
My daughter, Rose. She is three and has me in complete awe most of the time. Her young mind is truly inspiring.
