metropolisnewsMusic events lets kids try out instrumentsDecember 18, 2008 By Myrna Petlicki Your kids can't feed the "animals" but they can touch them and learn all about them at the Musical Instrument Petting Zoo at Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 500 N. Dunton Ave., 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20. "We're going to have four different classifications of instrument there plus four of our music faculty, as well as a few advanced students to demonstrate musical instrument beginning playing," said Kristen Gurbach Jacobson, outreach manager for the Metropolis School of the Performing Arts in Arlington Heights, which is presenting the program. The teachers are Paul Henry (guitar), Matthew Hart (percussion), Chie Yoshinaka (violin) and Elif Allenfort (piano). Each child attending the free event can spend time with the individual instructors to learn the parts of the instrument. They'll also have a chance to try playing the piano, guitar, drum and violin at this free drop-in family event. It's a great way to encourage children to take music lessons. "We've done a few one-day workshops at the library," Jacobson said. "I think it's important to be sure that we have a presence in our community." For details, call (847) 392-0100.
