Scrooge bumped off!

Are you a murder-mystery fan?

If so, “I’ll Be Home-icidal for Christmas,” just might be the show to see.
In this story, the merciless Ebenezer Scrooge doesn’t become a kind-hearted gentleman through the wisdom of the three Ghosts of Christmas.
Instead, he gets bumped off in this tale. And the question is, who did it? Was it Scrooge’s longtime employee, Bob Cratchit, Mrs. Cratchit or maybe the always-optimistic Tiny Tim?

Well, the audience will have to figure that one out at the end of the dinner show, which will be held in the ballroom at Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, 111 W. Campbell St., Arlington Heights.

Metropolis brings to life this interactive story at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Only a handful of tickets are left at $50 a person, and includes a three-course meal, show and cash bar.

“We’ve been doing murder mysteries for the past year and a half. In this play Scrooge gets whacked. It’s very light-hearted, not scary. It’s very interactive as well. The show gives people in the audience different things to read,” says Tim Rater, executive director of Metropolis. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we bring it back next year.”

Joel Friend, one of two actors in the murder mystery, suggested Metropolis produce “I’ll Be Home-icidal for Christmas.” Kevin O’Brien of Upstage Productions in St. Louis originally wrote the story.

“(The story) is a holiday party kind of setup that everyone is attending. Then, something goes horribly awry, and there are suspects in the case. People have to think about motive and opportunity and try and guess the killer. If somebody gets it right, they get a chance to win a prize,” Friend says.

The 32-year-old actor says the murder mystery has a comedic flair to it as well.
“There are funny costumes and off-the-wall characters,” Friend says. “People really enjoy (the murder mysteries). A lot of people are coming back. Last December we did a show called, ‘It’s a Wonderful Death.’”

In February, Metropolis will produce another murder mystery called “My Fair Murder,” a spoof on the classic film, “My Fair Lady.”
